The house still sets four places at the table. She has never explained why to the new owners. Maybe the table was originally longer, and felt incomplete when it wasn’t set. Maybe she liked the way her treasured people looked that way. They all had a place to sit. Only one place was empty. Aunt Maralyn Slowly, the evidence comes together. The house has been merely lived in. There has been no renovation, no repainting, no remodelling of any kind. The tempo of life inside its walls has been constant, unceasing. I’d not realised there were twins for the first several nights as we walked through the house. I’d thought she was married. It was only when we stepped into an empty room one night, then stood before the doorway to her bedroom in the morning that we saw the light hadn’t been touched, the shades lowered from their place, the furniture untouched after those long years. On one side, by the window, an empty crib stood in one corner. On the other, it had been welded shut.
