She always pours the tea into two cups, even now. The second one sits opposite hers, steaming quietly, growing cold in the afternoon light that falls across the table in perfect squares. Behind her, the kettle clicks off, satisfied. She doesn't turn around. Some habits are deeper than grief, she thinks, lifting the cup to lips that still remember how to shape someone else's name in the space between sips. The apartment is quiet except for the sound of breathing that's no longer his, the absence of footsteps that still echo somewhere behind her eyes. She reads aloud from a book he never finished. Outside, the street sweeper passes, brushes singing against asphalt, a rhythm she used to hum against his collarbone in dark mornings. In the bedroom closet, his shirts hang like empty prayers, sleeves reaching for arms that never quite learned how to let go completely. She doesn't wash them anymore. What scent of loss wouldn't be replaced by detergent, by time, by common enough chemicals masquerading as cleanliness? Sometimes she catches herself setting the table for two, placing his spoon beside hers like a question mark she already knows the answer to. The mailman still delivers magazines for both names. She keeps them stacked beside his chair, unread, growing yellow around the edges like old letters or promises or photographs of people who never imagined they'd become ghosts while still alive.
