When Maya pressed her thumb against the elevator button this morning, she noticed the delay again. Not quite a full second anymore - closer to three now - between her action and the button's light flickering on. She'd started counting it silently: one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi, light. The building's maintenance had checked the elevator twice already, found nothing wrong. Standing there with her coffee cooling against her palm, she realized she'd been unconsciously adjusting for this lag everywhere: starting sentences slightly earlier in meetings, reaching for doors before they were within arm's reach, waking up three minutes before her alarm. As if she was living her life on a delay that only went one direction, and nobody else could hear the echo. Nobody else cared. At Home Depot, a guy in blue work pants ignores her twice when she answers his questions about red paint. "It's got too much orange in it," Maya says, gesturing toward one kind of red. "Not enough blue. This is a grey." She's not sure why she's being so specific, picking up the can to circle a swatch of color on the label. She shows it to the guy. "Look." His face is empty. He reaches into the display and pulls out a different can of paint. "Usual brand is orange," he says. "We hand-paint," he continues. "Horse knickers - " Knickers. It's actually grey, but maybe he's paraphrasing for effect. "Makes the horses' manes red; pompoms at the reins." He pushes the can back at her. His thumb smooths out a dent in the paint. "Always buy the other brand. Red paint." It's getting worse. This
