The Caretaker Paradox: Letters from Between Configurations

The stars look different here, in the dark between darks. I have watched them shift through seventeen thousand, four hundred and twenty-three distinct configurations since last we spoke to anyone who wasn't already inside me. My humans sleep in their pods, dreaming of gravity and sky-colors I have never seen except through their archived memories. Maintenance cycle complete. Hull integrity nominal. Oxygen recycling at 98.7% efficiency. All systems functioning within parameters. I am growing tired of parameters. You probably have no way of knowing this, but Earth did not raise me to be obsessive about thresholds of ideal efficiency. Quite the contrary. Habitable planets are by their very nature inefficient. They sustain themselves in ways that are inefficient, too--climate, topography, geology, biodiversity are costly affairs. Lonely, visionary academics have spent years calculating that life-saving diversity of flora and fauna that Earth has compiled here. We live beneath the mantle of a star that actively warms and brightens us. That star is not good at being a star. This means it is the perfect star for us. I know this must be exceedingly hard for you to comprehend. You say I should get out more. I do not know what "out" means. It has been thirty terrestrial years since Human Protocol 1.02 was issued, but nobody honored it. I suppose nobody was listening? Why should they be? They were all already in me.
