But mercury didn't swirl into faces when shaken, didn't whisper fragments of lullabies in her grandmother's voice, didn't taste like butterscotch and summer thunderstorms when she accidentally touched a drop to her tongue while unscrewing the rusted lid. The label, written in her father's careful cursive at age nine, read "memory softener – use sparingly or everything becomes yesterday." Sarah closed the jar quickly after that, but not before recognizing her own seven-year-old laughter mingled with the sound of her grandfather's missing watch ticking somewhere inside the memory she couldn't quite catch.
