The doorknob was warm, warmer than it had any right to be in this house where nothing ever changed temperature without explanation. She had touched it every morning for fifteen years, and it had always been cool, slightly damp from the morning fog that never quite reached the windows. Today, it pulsed against her palm like something alive, and she knew—though she could not say how—that whatever waited beyond it would not be breakfast smells or her mother's humming or the cat demanding milk at the usual time. It would be something that would require a different name for everything she had ever known. "Mother?" she said. Her voice was high and tight, like rubber, and could have been any sound the dark wanted to make. "Mother," she said again, trying for the food sounds she would be expected to make. The door moved, tremblingly, yielding towards the inside. "Mother?" She watched a wet, heavy flap of cloth fall from the door toward her on the tile floor and her next thought was what happened to Ruth, though of course Ruth wasn't dead. It was the stay asleep part. She wasn't there. Out here. Beneath the shroud of endless, imagined time, she wasn't there. She wasn't anywhere. The latch fell from the catch, the door moving
