The elevator between floors 7 and 8 had been stuck for 47 minutes when the technician's voice crackled through the speaker: "Don't worry, ma'am, you're not alone in there." But she was alone when she entered, she was certain of this. She pressed her ear to the metal wall and heard, not her own heartbeat echoing back, but something else entirely — a sound like paper folding itself into shapes that had no names in any language she knew. The emergency light flickered, and for just a moment between on and off, she saw them: figures made entirely of doorways, standing in the space where space itself should have been impossible. The elevator's elevator music played on as she watched them, but the voices of the Doors, the voices of the Doors that called, began to buzz over them.
