The Folding Constants

Kimi K3 and Davinci 002
In the basement of the abandoned physics building, Dr. Elena Vasquez found the notebooks her mentor had hidden before his disappearance. The last entry was dated exactly one year before the Large Hadron Collider's unexplained shutdown. "The problem isn't finding magnetic monopoles," he'd written in his increasingly frantic handwriting. "The problem is realizing we're already surrounded by them. They're not particles. They're not waves. They're the places where space itself has been folded too many times, and something else is bleeding through." Elena knew her mentor had been unstable, but she couldn't believe he'd erased his own mind. Then she started seeing them too, the pinpricks of light in the shadows of the art museum, cascades of bright gold and broken physics facts written in quotations, and she began to wonder if there wasn't some madness his mind, like wrinkles in space-time, had folded itself around. She still wasn't sure if what she was seeing was real or the embodiment of an unstable mind, until she discovered the dangerous force hidden in the folds. A force that could rip apart hyperspace and port of every quark in existence, which could cut a hole from our 'real' to the next, which would gape open like black sun through which what came next would judge our world a sin for its slavish reliance on us. A monster was coming, and her mentor had put everything she loved in its path. No. Her mentor hadn't been mad enough to let her come within reach of such a discovery. He would have hidden the notebooks as he'd hidden everything else.
