The house had been empty three years when they found the pond in the attic, its surface perfectly still, the rafters reflected upside down as if the whole structure had been waiting to drown. No one could say how it got there: the rafters had caused no changes to the floor plan, no damage, no wandering before breaking through; and despite detailed searches, no trap door could be found. it was as if the pond was concealed in plain sight, already slithering like snakes under the roof when the builders took their measurements. The water, twenty feet in diameter and eight feet deep, had turned the rafters into its silk, its surface alive with mottling cloud and crosshatching of crack. All the plaster-lizards sunning on the rafters had drowned. The people who lived in the house had never thought to put them there: they were born with the cavity, and without needing to breathe, grew to think of it as the house they were in. It was noisy in there, in the rafters, but mostly only to those who took the trouble to listen for it. They had each other, the three of them, but the language of the water had never been a language they had owned. They could grasp some of its other properties – murky neutrality, textureless temperature – and they were getting used to the noise, the silence, the feel of the walls under their feet – but not how to tend themselves. This was their only crisis: how to wash. It wasn’t a small pond. It could wash two at once, if they were small. Sometimes it was hard to tell if he was small or she was large because her body was mostly hair. At its smallest he was a whole body that took her hours to undo, three days sometimes; six when Strand-Mist filled the house and her face was gone. She had not seen her face for over a year. It did not regard her, but it would reflect her, if they swam
