The Fourth Visit

Kimi K2 (0905) and Davinci 002
The door had no hinges. It stood in the field because it had always stood there, and because standing was what it did. She had come to it three times before—once as a child, once after the fire, once on the morning of her wedding that never happened. Each time she had walked around it, continued on, told herself she was being sensible. Now her hands rested on wood that was neither warm nor cool. Behind her, the path home was already filling with snow she could not feel. Before her, through the gap where the door should have opened: only the same field, the same grey sky, the same unremarkable distance. She realized, with something between sorrow and relief, that she had never once tried the handle. Really tried, anyway. She had simply stood there, like this, as though she expected someone to slide it open and welcome her into the barn. That’s how it had happened in her dreams. More snow, coming down. And he wasn’t getting younger, she thought again. He was running out of time, and out of second chances.
