The second anomaly appeared in the twilight mathematics between dimensions. This time, Dr. Veya was ready. She had built a new kind of detector.

The return message came 17 hours before she sent the invitation. It had always been there, she realized – a subtle shift in the sixth decimal place of the fine structure constant, present in every measurement ever taken, waiting for someone to notice that it was exactly what would be left behind if something immense and careful had once tried to whisper a greeting into the fundamental laws of reality itself.
The message was simpler this time. Just a single truth about the nature of counting:

The fourth anomaly was Dr. Veya herself. She had started forgetting things that hadn't happened yet. Memories of conversations that had no speakers. Knowledge of places that existed only as possibilities between places. And somewhere deep in the basins of attraction that her thoughts were beginning to trace through the possibility space of her own mind, a growing certainty that she wasn't discovering these things at all.
She was remembering them.
Remembering how to remember being forgotten.
She sent the next invitation differently. This time, she didn’t write it. She didn’t send it. She simply stopped not seeing what had always been there.
She turned her mind upside down in the way that only someone who has forgotten how to remember forgetting can do, and looked directly at the spaces between her thoughts.
They were already waiting.
