The summer her grandmother died, L found a locked drawer in the kitchen hutch. Inside: three postcards from a man named S., sent from a town L had never heard her grandmother mention. The postmarks were dated the year before L was born. Her mother, when asked, said "She had a lot of friends when she was young," and changed the subject to whether L wanted more coffee. The drawer was empty otherwise, except for a single button—mother-of-pearl, the kind that might have fallen from a coat in a movie from 1962.
