The key was made of glass and time. When she held it to the light, she could see her fifth birthday party playing backwards inside the handle - candles sucking smoke back into themselves, balloons deflating into flat rubber sheets, her mother's smile reversing into a look of surprise. She had found it in the hallway that shouldn't exist between her memory of the hospital and her memory of the ocean. The door it opened would be new. All the doors it opened were always new, even when they led to places she knew by heart. She turned the key anyway. The house always wanted her to turn the key. It wouldn't be able to wake up her mother for dinner tonight. Half an hour later, she folded her mother's coat onto the front porch swing and went inside. It was her own first memory of the house the key had opened. It was the memory of a five-year-old looking at the bathwater to make sure the rubber duck didn't wash away. Bodies pass out of measurable time, but faceless water just goes on and on cementing itself around whatever shapes it finds. Whatever the house found when the key turned stayed anchored to the flow.
