The first pattern was subtle - a perturbation in the decay rate of a particular isotope that always appeared exactly 3.14159265359 seconds after each solar flare, regardless of the flare's intensity or duration. The second pattern was the inverse of the first, but inverted in a way that made the concept of inversion itself seem inadequate. The third pattern... had no actual existence other than the gravitational waves it generated, collapsing as they passed through the single graviton. It was the combination of the four that rill proved to be "the same thing, save for time."
That was enough - and the idea of "time" needed replacing - for Professor Chen and his team to realize that the paradox could be resolved by... deforming space itself, altering the relationship between position and time. The resulting universe was a kaleidoscope of space-time, the laws of physics fracturing and reforming like quicksilver with each passing photon, and physics itself - commonplace to us living in three dimensions - was everywhere and never in the same form twice. Worse, each time-space deformation was independent - simultaneous, but separate... and each universe therefore existed without the ability to perceive another, save for the most futile and temporary of interaction in the short-lived "pushes and prisms" of the foam itself. The push of a single photon now occurred so frequently and with such rapidity that it was the only demonstration of distended, crying space-time that the universe so briefly revealed - billions of these moments occurring every hour.
The entire nature of science as we knew it - whether based in observation, indirection, or deduction - simply broke down across the entire set of now infinitely differential universes. A being slipping between universes with space-time damping in one period might leave there to find a world that unfolded in a half microsecond. They would be perfectly aware of this frozen, immobile State - but since milliseconds were as alien to them as years were to us, they would have no concept of time's passage nor opportunity to experience change across those parallel lines. The basic laws of science and metamathematics worked, of course; the laws of logic sufficed because they needed only be consistent across the Lambda so as to comprehend any single universe. But the very notion of the "laws of causality" that quantum interaction rested on, of the sequence of cause and effect that our 'logic' is truly dependent upon, have made no sense in a world that lacked simultaneity, consistency, or even 'relative' eternity◆ About the ending
