She counted eight untouched croissants in the display case before noticing the clock behind the counter had stopped at 9:47—the exact time stamped on her receipt from yesterday. Same receipt, same smudge of lipstick on the edge, folded in her palm like a ticket stub to a movie that never started playing. They never stopped petrifying . Beautifully condemned. A plane shrieked overhead and the viability of actual tickets became a thought. A recent one, in fact. She hadn't slept much, wasn't eating properly. Couldn't think much past surrender.
