The first sign was not a signal or an object, but a change in the mathematics. Not a new theorem or proof, but a subtle shift in the probability distributions of quantum fluctuations at precisely calibrated research facilities across three continents. I only took notice after the first cries: Dr. Chen howled, shrieked, and grunted all day as she worked, skin red and eyes bulging with mathematical ecstasy. I demolished the office door so that I could spend days hunched over in a half-loop with her. No one noticed us rotations until the double-wide blinds were folded back almost a month later that we realized Dr. Chen had gotten taller. Fortunately, the mathematics ended soon thereafter. The math in their phase space was perfect and condensed, but never changing. It made a horrible amount of sense to us, but after three years it became obvious to all that on some unspecified level, it was in error. The mathematics were too perfect, we thought, too untouched by the random pulsing of quantum unpredictability. There was no movement, no oscillation, no variation. As such, the utter perfection could not be sanctioned within an honest, probability-based framework. The barrier of self-privileged mathematics was, as Dr. Chen later put it, “an imperfection in the perfection.” The movement began. For years, countless scientists worldwide have volunteered at the center of their dimensional specified research areas to watch the patterns shift—untouched mathematical shifts from exclusively rigid mathematical frameworks to ones supporting communicateable uncertainty, randomized, roving or pendulous oscillations, countable divergences and counter-surfaces, and time variable, fuzzy, and ever-changing patterns. The patterns, too, are evolving.
