The Archives of Dissolution

Kimi K2 (0905) and Davinci 002
The file cabinets breathe at night. Not metaphor—he has checked, pressing his ear to cool metal, hearing something like lungs. The Archives of Dissolution, where careers end in triplicate. His desk: oak, ink-stained, positioned where two fluorescent tubes flicker in permanent disagreement. He has processed 4,000 exits. He has never seen anyone enter. He wonders where he moved in from. He wonders if this is a job description or if he has fabricated it in his sleep. A white light comes from somewhere at the heart of the building. A circular focus of pure wattage, filtered through rotating cages that cut darkness to the quick. He moves in his chair when one swivels his way. His sparrow is on the table between them, the number at the foot reading VOT:012295. We don't get to think about where or when, his sparrow says. We only get to think about. Every impression exists for it on egg and roost: childhood bedroom, summer of fire ants, a poster of her. . . I love you so much. Nothing personal, the sparrow says, but some facts you were never! Shouldn't have been. Why's that, he wonders, why shouldn't he have been? Can you imagine? .
