She found herself measuring time by how long the dust remained undisturbed on his side of the dresser. Three weeks today, she noted, tracing her finger through the gray film that had settled over his watch, his keys, the small ceramic bowl he'd kept spare change in. The bowl was empty now, of course. Everything was empty. She picked up the watch and held it to her ear, listening for something that wasn't there - not the tick, which had stopped years ago, but the smaller sound of him reaching for it in the morning darkness, the way his breathing would change when he remembered what day it was. And he always remembered what day it was. It was one of the first things she'd loved about him. The dust left a ghostly outline on her finger. She could easily erase it, but she let the speckles of grain remain, just so she could know where to find them at night. Drawn into his unreachable world. Hungrily. Fingertips picked up the watch, wrapped themselves around its convex surface. The inky liquid that had evaporated from the dial spread out like a dark stain. She could almost see him reaching for the time, noting the date, and smiling slightly, wordlessly, as if touching that ancient crystal didn't cause a jolt of pain that would stay with him the entire day. When she placed the watch back down, she could see his outline, the imprint of his palm stretched impossibly across the dresser. Her fingers touched the curve of the watch, as if searching for his fingers. The fallen leaves made her feet itch. She drew bare calves in towards stability against the chair as she shaved
