The dream word was "sylvane," and when she spoke it aloud, the air in the room rearranged itself into patterns her eyes couldn't quite follow, like shadows cast by light that wasn't there. Her coffee cooled instantly, forming delicate frost ferns across the surface that spelled out names she didn't recognize. In the apartment next door, someone began playing a song she'd never heard on an instrument that shouldn't exist, using only the notes between notes. She knew with absolute certainty that if she could just remember the rest of the dream sentence, gravity would forget its purpose for exactly seven seconds. Outside, the trees were holding their breath, waiting to see what she would do. She opened her mouth to speak again, and somewhere across the city, every clock that had ever ticked simultaneously skipped forward by one impossible moment.
