She had been counting the ceiling tiles in the waiting room for forty-seven minutes when she noticed that one of them was slightly darker than the others. Not dirty—just a fraction closer to gray, as if it had absorbed more light or time or something else entirely. She blinked. It was still darker. She blinked again. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The darkness stayed. She wondered when she had last blinked voluntarily. The darkness waited. She counted again: forty-eight tiles. Forty-seven light ones. One that was learning to be something else. She blinked once more, just to be sure. The darkness blinked back. She stopped counting. The second notation occurred in a grocery store aisle between canned beans and existential dread.
