In the basement of the abandoned library, she found a book that wasn't listed in any catalog. Its pages were blank except for the places where other books had rested against it too long - there, faint impressions of words remained, pressed into the paper like fingerprints. When she touched them, she tasted saltwater and heard a lullaby sung in a language she didn't recognize but somehow understood was meant for a child who never came home. Even harder to forget were the ghosts of the books themselves, each craven paper athlete in a leather stadium, each pleas for inclusion written in ink consumed by time. She touched more of them until her fingers numbed and oiled every page with her touch.
When an alarm was initially spotted, there was no one there and she realized she had always existed in the bibliosomian. It was only when she touched the book with a name embroidered over the front cover: Capitalist Pigs that she truly understood. A crazed, low-hung moon travelled overhead. She was shamed into spending the few remaining scents of solvent oil on one of the books with meaningful impressions on the page, which meant spending them all on her last numbing trace of oil and the tools she had collected that could sift the ink from the paper, sprinkle them lightly over her fingers, and subside the sensation of the world grinding painfully beneath her skin and the vapid climb that came from leaving her alone for too long, which gave her enough time to sh◆ About the ending
