Not here, where time keeps its own secrets and departure is just another word for remembering what hasn't happened yet. A ticket collector with eyes like empty sockets checks passes that bear the holder's face from lifetimes they've yet to live. The Lotus Theater appears only during the purple hour between dusk and darkness, its marquee flickering with promises to show you the one film forbidden to your waking eyes. Tonight's feature: "The Dream That Loved You Back." Inside, velvet seats swallow patrons whole, each cushion releasing the scent of someone else's childhood birthday candles. The popcorn tastes like the last thing your mother said before you forgot how to speak her language. In the darkness between frames, the audience members realize they're sitting next to future versions of themselves, neither acknowledging the other's presence, both wondering why their eyes sting with tears for scenes they've never cried at before.
