The archivist found the first one wedged beneath a server rack: a perfect sphere of amber, and inside it, a frozen search query from 2004. When held to the light, the words inside were still trying to load. After some effort, the query had fully rendered. The text read:
"You best get on a plane now, Merlin." The sage responded, "That ship is sailing and I'm stuck on its stern."
The second orb turned out to be a playlist that appeared to have been left behind in the changeover from MusicMatch to iTunes. Listening to the first song, "Every Now and Then," brought about a mild tremor throughout the archive buildings. It threw the librarians off their books. Doctors came running in, claiming the archive was leaking tremors, yet no physical damage could be found. The manager told everyone to go home. The swarm of librarians and staff lowered their umbrellas and piled out of the room faster than it took to load the metadata of the discarded record. The rain humidified the parking lot and mottled the foliage outside with tiny ice rings. The librarians' coats swapped. Clicking their umbrella-points toward the parking garage, they left the archive behind save for a dull roar.
The final orb was found in the branch-house packed up in a box carted in from the storage center. It was located down in the stacks of the administrative annex in some old crates of international stamps. It was perfectly shaped and in perfect condition, weighed almost nothing, feeling something like a kinetoscope disc or a VHS tape on the floor. Not wanting to hold it too close for fear of magical contamination, an intern turned her back and slipped on some orange backup gloves, reviewed the official archive policy for archive-security requirements, and used the low-density sensors◆ About the ending
