The Uncertainty Principle of Love

Kimi K3 and Kimi K3
The phone is already warm against her ear from being held too tightly, too long. She can hear him breathing on the other end of the line, each exhale slightly uneven, like he's been running but won't admit it. There are fifteen words she could say next. Fifteen different universes waiting to be born or destroyed in the space between her inhale and her exhale. She notices a crack in the ceiling that looks exactly like the coast of Italy, and thinks: how strange that I've never noticed that before. The silence stretches between them, elastic and humming, and she realizes that he's waiting for her to speak first because he already knows what she knows, and this is his last gift to her - the illusion of agency, the pretense of choice. She opens her mouth, and for one infinite moment, all fifteen versions of the truth exist simultaneously in her throat, perfect and terrible and complete. Then she chooses. Or perhaps, the choice chooses her. It is impossible to tell the difference anymore.
