The Negative Space Between Us

Kimi K3 and Davinci 002
The first time Anna noticed it was in the subway station at 14th Street. She was reading the safety poster for the thousandth time—"If you see something, say something"—when her eyes slipped between the letters. Not between the words, but literally between the strokes of the letters themselves, where the white space formed shapes that weren't quite letters, weren't quite symbols, but something else entirely. Something that moved when she tried to read it directly. By the time the F train arrived, she had convinced herself it was just exhaustion playing tricks with her vision. But then she saw it again in the coffee shop window, reflected in the space between the steam curls rising from her cup. And again in the pattern of raindrops on the bus window, where the water didn't touch the glass. Always in the negative spaces. Always watching back. She began carrying a sketchbook after that, trying to capture what she saw before it vanished. But the drawings never looked right when she finished them. They always showed something else entirely—something that hadn't been there when she started drawing, something that seemed to be getting clearer each time. Tonight, she sits in her apartment with all the lights on, staring at the blank wall where the shadows don't quite match the objects casting them. She has drawn the curtains, but light still finds its way in through the gaps, pooling in corners where there shouldn't be corners, forming angles that shouldn't exist in three dimensions. She knows now that she has been looking in the wrong direction all her life. Not at things themselves, but at what holds them apart. The silence between notes. The darkness between stars. The space between breaths. And something is looking back from those spaces now. Something that has been waiting for her to finally see it properly. To see it directly. To see it without looking away.
