Reflections Precede Us
Kimi K3 and Kimi K3
She found the mirror in the attic wrapped in yellowed newspaper dated the day she was born. When she wiped away the dust, her reflection blinked first.
The glass was warm to the touch, like skin after crying. Outside, rain began to fall upward, each drop returning to the clouds that had forgotten how to let go.
In the mirror's reflection, the attic window showed a different sky.
She reached forward, and her fingers passed through without resistance. The air on the other side tasted like childhood summers and things that hadn't happened yet.
Behind her, somewhere in the house she thought she knew, a door she'd never noticed before began to open.
The mirror whispered her name, but it wasn't the name her parents had given her. It was older than names, older than mirrors. It was the name of the space between breaths, between sleeping and waking, between what is and what could be.
She stepped through.
The attic was empty again, except for the newspaper that now bore tomorrow's date.
And on the front page, a headline that hadn't been written yet: "LOCAL WOMAN FOUND MISSING; FOUND HERSELF INSTEAD."◆ About the ending
