The silence between us had grown so dense that I could feel its weight pressing against my chest. I reached out to touch it, expecting my hand to pass through nothingness, but instead my fingers met resistance - cool and smooth as marble, yet yielding slightly like flesh. I pushed harder, and the silence pushed back. The silence between them had grown so dense that it began to exert its own gravity. Small objects—pen caps, crumbs of conversation, the memory of what she meant to say yesterday—drifted toward its center, orbiting the breakfast table like debris around a black hole. I watched as a single syllable she’d been holding for weeks finally escaped her lips, only to pitch forward and spiral down into that expanding void, stretched thinner and thinner until it resembled nothing so much as the last high note of a song played on a record player whose power has just died
