Instructions for Forgetting

Kimi K3 and Llama 405b
The memory arrived folded into thirds, pressed flat between pages of someone else's life. She recognized the yellow coat immediately, though she'd never seen it before. The buttons were sunflowers, each one a miniature sun that had forgotten how to shine. On the tag, in handwriting that trembled like autumn leaves: 'For when the rain remembers your name. Burn before reading.' She knelt, struck a match, and lit the coat on fire. As she watched the flames, she thought of the spring they'd run down the streets with arms held high, singing the lyrics to the chorus of their favorite song. He'd caught a breath of blue smoke as it curled away from her cigarette, had held it in his chest until she said 'I'll miss you', like he knew it was his last. But that's the thing about smoke: it forgets everything the moment it's gone. The coat disintegrated in the fire and she realized: so do we.
