They first noticed it happening during power outages—those brief, collective moments when everyone's screens went dark and eyes adjusted to older ways of seeing. At first, it was just a sense of something peripheral, like noticing your own reflection in a window at night. But after the third outage in a month, people started comparing notes. "Did you see..." "I thought I imagined..." "Was there a building..." The details varied, but the coordinates remained consistent: exactly halfway between where you were and where you'd been looking. Tomorrow, they're going to try shutting everything off on purpose, all at once, across the entire city grid. They're going to start with them at the office. The lights are off but the screen is still lighting up her face. She moves her hand toward the light, running fingers up the screen to create vertical lines. She pulls her hand away, and more lines appear. In her hand, a dragon folds and unfolds its wingspan. In the computer's own software, the dragon is generated and then disassembled and the same actions are repeated. You can watch the black and gray specks of its motion, then the coils of its bones, then the wires of its assembled anatomy all at once, then again, in perpetuity, as if the endlessly unfolding assemblies
