The teacup was exactly where I left it on the windowsill, but the chip on the rim was gone. It had been there for years, since the day my mother dropped it during her last visit. I remember because she cried not about the cup but about the tea spilling out - "All that wasted warmth," she'd said. Now the porcelain was smooth and whole, and I couldn't remember if it had ever been broken at all. The cookbook was back, with its leaves unstripped and pages wrinkled rather than spattered - nothing but faint blotches where the cake batter had run and struck the binding. I stared down at the neatness, and then I crouched next to her, brushed the curls behind her ear, and moved the blinds to let in more light. Before shifting I caught a whiff of orange peel and nutmeg, felt the light sting on my upper arm, and my fingertips grew warm when I touched her skin. I kissed her forehead and covered that part of her with my hand as I watched the fingers stretch until they touched the china. She touched it, or reached for it, but I didn't know which part was my imagination. I closed my eyes and waited. I knew how this usually worked, and I had a limited amount of time to release her. But when I opened my eyes again, her hand was still on the windowsill. She was fast asleep, and I realized that my hands were still on her, too. Her skin was warm and faintly smelling of a seasonal blend she'd been at last year. This had happened to me before; she'd slept for hours and hours and hours.
