The door had no handle on the outside, only a shallow depression where a palm might rest. It was warm, always warm, as if someone had only just pressed against it from within. Elias had been walking the dunes for three days when he found it—no frame, no wall, just the door standing in the sand like a promise kept too long. He did not remember opening it. He remembered only the smell of rain on stone, and the distant sound of his own name being spoken by a voice he had not yet possessed. He reached out and turned the knob, but the door swung only inward.
Inside the chamber, Elias followed the sound and discovered a coastal pit spilling onto the lowest dunes. The air turned cool and damp within the pit, surrounded by large white exo-skeletons.
