The silence that followed wasn't empty—it was full of all the words that had never existed in any tongue. She tasted honey and electricity in her mouth. The war would end tomorrow, or it had ended yesterday, or perhaps armies had never marched at all except in the stories their languages needed to tell about separation. The two chief negotiators reached across the table and touched her open palms to theirs, and suddenly she remembered being born—not her own birth, but the moment consciousness itself had split into you and me, and how it had tasted of the same impossible sweetness that now filled the room. Their languages began unraveling from their mouths like silk scarves pulled by a magician who had forgotten the trick was supposed to be an illusion.
