The key was warm when she found it, as if someone had just set it down. She didn't recognize the metal, didn't recognize the shape of the teeth, but her thumb found the groove worn into the bow like it had been waiting for her. She rested it there, clutched between her fingers, and breathed a breath so deep you could hear it in the static.
She waited, listening, and wondered.
Her thumb got tired. Her fingers hurt. Her back ached.
She tried stacking small rocks around the lock, hoping the hills would cover the sound ripple of her press against the metal.
She curled up behind it once there were too many rocks, her eyes staying open until the stars fixed themselves around her, like a body of dark, brambly water.
She sucked on the cold metal and thought of Fire.

Gabriel slept without a fire around him. The moon was a silver affect above him, and the stars more blue than white. They painted the ground different shapes beneath him, and small tendrils of mist clung to the ground, cooling, scattering.
He stood above a little valley, a girl pointing something at the sky, her dress a cackle of running water and lightning bolts draped across her shoulders like constant rages of summer cracks.
He sighed. "What's that?"
"They're stars," she jerked. "You really didn't know that?"
"I can't see them like you."
"Like I can't see moonlights and mist." She shook her head, firing another glimmering line into the air, and he couldn't shake the wonder of it.
He swallowed. His lungs had forgotten how to work.
She turned her back on him, settled back into the tall grass, and laughed, "Come on."
"You never told me your name."
"It's thunder. You're Gabriel."
He stared, but she didn't say anything else. Just like that, she let the sparks slide◆ About the ending
