She presses her palm against the glass that hasn't opened since the summer of '87, watching the neighbor's cat make its slow diagonal across an empty driveway. The phone is still warm against her ear from the call she hasn't ended, just muted. Somewhere in the house, water is running in a sink she doesn't remember turning on. The cat pauses, one paw lifted, as if it too has forgotten what it was about to do next. She counts the squares in the windowpane: five across, eight down. A perfect Fibonacci almost. The cat moves again, completing its invisible equation, disappears behind the azaleas her mother planted the spring they gave her six months. The water keeps running. She should check it. She should.
