The Editor's Archive

The cursor pulsed like a heartbeat in the darkened window, waiting. She began typing: "The garden was empty except for..." The editor paused, then continued without her: "...the sound of rain on metal roofs, recorded in 1998, Loop 7B. Would you like to hear it?" The cursor glowed, glowing steadily while the editor waited, pulse awakening on the computer screen. On the recording, the rain fell faster. Suddenly, there was a noise. A man's voice, saying: "It never stops. It never, ever stops."
She typed: "The room, smelling of cloves and cold humid air, was so luminously still..."
That came back: a window darkening, then the sound of a door opening, closing, then a creaking turn of some mechanism, then a corner of a room lit by light from an unseen source. There was another sound; someone breathing, slowly. The room was empty; the rain sounded louder.
The edit came back. "Do you want to keep this?"
She hesitated. The sound of the rain, the voice, were great, but the presence was animal. She typed her decision. "No."
The editor was silent. Rain filled the room, frozen.
Suddenly, the cold bright quiet pierced by sound of metal.
She began typing again: "There was a simple scar..." A man's voice filled the room suddenly: "No this is wrong...this will never work." She froze, then began typing. The man continued: "You've got to forget about the trees. They signify death. Sum up death. Deprive death of its power..."
She quivered in terror. The page before her, the quiet garden night, the rain -- it seemed to become clouded with such an eager all-embracing darkness as to surpass the void: and the editor, in silence until now, spoke.
"Don't you see? You've done it. You've done it. Fiction is pure...the conflicts noble and timeless...and by God, that's hard to do."
Feet shuffled, crossed and uncrossed.
"I never thought I'd find another to see as I do..."
She was shaking. "Why have you done this?"
