And, in that space of time, the smallest disturbance can change all that comes after. The landscape they could see may have looked shockingly the same, but everything was different. Her perception of sound had shifted from merely understanding to unknowingly being understood. Wei’s head afforded an audience to the strings vibrating between her ears without hearing the music. The information took shape all around her like air, a great storm of sparks docking, veering, forking and merging, and as though in some shifting field of symmetrical magnetism, she could trace what they traced and sound that thought back to itself.
