The third time Maria stepped through the memory of her grandmother's kitchen, she noticed the wallpaper was different again - this time it showed tiny blue birds instead of the roses she remembered remembering. The smell of cinnamon was sharper too, almost painful. She hesitated at the doorway between versions, knowing that somewhere deeper inside this memory was the original moment when she first learned what grief tasted like, before all the remembering had begun to sweeten it with time. In the space between her childhood self and her remembering self, between the kitchen that was and the kitchen her mind had redecorated with each retelling, Maria found herself wondering if she had ever really been there at all. The aroma shifted once more, toward something burning. Maria stepped forward anyway, because sometimes the only way back is through, and sometimes the only way out is deeper in.
