In the space between the phone's first ring and her mother's hello, Maya discovered she could choose not to answer. Not just this call - any call. Not just calls - any summons. She could inhabit that infinite instant before obligation crystallized into action, and in that pause, she could rewrite everything that followed. Poised with her finger just above the touch screen, she reconciled herself to her choice: once clicked, the "answer" button would undo this pause. Instead, she let the caller's voice fade to the sound of the grinder's coarse whir.
"Call Amma, jaan." Maya's father said it to himself, almost, wiping his face as he leaned back against the wall behind him, where the silent and burgeoned vehicle was now concealed.
