She found the first recording on a Tuesday, though the device insisted it was a Sunday in March 1987, a date she would not live for another eleven years. She found a half-dozen more between then and her fiftieth birthday, as well as footage of her death on 9 January 2002 from the results of a vicious attack in a mall in New York City, circa December 2001.
At first she had simply studied them, not looking for truth but trying to find the answers. When she finally came to her death, though, she realised she was wasting time. No doubt parts had been missed, and it went without saying she had lied, possibly about some of the people, places and objects shown to her in the recordings. Just as surely, others would pop up if she searched hard enough.
Besides, she caught huge chunks of her early life on camera that she had no recollection of. A lot of the people in the videos were from old childhood diaries – both hers and her siblings – they had kept over the years. But seeing faces of strangers, people who had come and gone… where had they come from? Valerie could now recall so much more than she could before she watched the footage.
