The Cord That Measured Night

She found the door where no wall had been, and through it, her own voice calling from somewhere she had not yet been. It stretched like a rooftop cord from her bedroom into the whiteness her mother called "night." She remembered what the man used to call it while she pretended not to listen. He spoke very softly, and, though she heard him then, she can not remember a single word he said. She tried to imagine the sound; every thunderstorm brought it closer. She sat at the cracked windowsill and waited sometimes, heard the wail sometimes. But then her mother would close the curtains, and they couldn't see her. One day when she was in her mother's room, hoping to find some clue, she came upon a candle in there. Such a gleaming little thing, but it burned itself out without even lighting the curtain that covered it. The next day, the man took her to walk in the woods when it had snowed overnight. When they came home, her mother was waiting for them, only she didn't speak, not even to the man. Had no desire to. So after drifting all winter, he left one day, while she was sleeping in her mother's room behind the curtain. She woke a long time later and ran outside, to she did not know where. Instead she went back home to the house. The house was gone, dried-up. All she could see behind the orange fence was
