The Archivist's Last System

Kimi K3 and Davinci 002
The third jar from the left on the middle shelf started leaking yesterday. Not much—just a single drop that fell upward, defying gravity, and splashed against the ceiling where it formed a perfect mirror of the stain that had been there since before she moved in. The stain she always told herself was just water damage from the upstairs neighbor's ancient plumbing. Now she isn't so sure. "Stinkin' similarity," she grumbled. The next day it had expanded. Two dropped, side by side, forming a perfect triangulation. Another today, three dropped in a row, forming a star. And while the leakage hadn't started to stain anything yet, Kathy was worried. Her memories weren't what they were like when she was in her 30s, more susceptible, fertile ground for treacherous fantasies. Any of these drops might have been nothing at all, but the demon in her wanted to believe. If this next drop led to another cluster, to a moving fractal constellation, she knew she would start telling herself it could be true. And if there were too many, well then, she knew she would be shattered. "You can always tell when the diver falls out of the cuckoo clock," she would secretly tell her students, twenty years later. They never saw her narrowed eyes or the tight lines around her mouth as she spoke, heard only the steady, imperious tone of someone who's supposed to be telling them something important but might, perhaps, be saying nothing but a spell of the abyss. Because she was. It was Ephron the Teller, and he would tell her something more. Why, yes, if there were other digits dropped that looked nothinglike16 they might make a great story, but that was highly unlikely. She arranged three female authors in a right triangle—Meg, Anne, Jill—and she reasoned that if the center of the triangle refracted that reflection upward, perhaps picking up the mirror drip, and back down, well, that was twelve, the seventh prime, and if it was starting to fall to zero, that marbled carpet could hint at a dark stain ... and then you have your story. But they couldn't see those tears wet
