The night porter at the Hotel Dormiveglia has worked the 11 PM to nowhere shift for eleven years, though he stopped counting after he realized the sunrise never quite arrives. His name is written on a brass tag he found in a coat that wasn't his. He polishes the mirrors because the guests who appear in them need reminding which side they're on. In all the years he's been there, he's never run into himself. The manager has asked him if he plans to work forever and to not mention the cracks in the electric floor lamps. But they need not be mentioned to the guests of the Hotel Dormiveglia, who know them by name and the stories they carry and the fact that they never die. Appointments have been made from the past to the modern day, but the cracks do degrade a little each day. His wages are paid to the nameless railroad crew outside the Hotel Dormiveglia and are placed in bottles on ice at the front gate on pay day. The train crew take more than their pay, leaving just enough railing and locomotive to maintain the fiction of a castle no one ever seems to hear the engines calling for. But it's not all about the money. It's about the safety valve. The Hotel Dormiveglia contacts only one kind of guest, willing to stop everything to know what's going on. They're sleepwalkers, visitors to that nowhere place in their head that is larger than any reality. They're looking for escape. They're drawn to the Hotel Dormiveglia for very simple reasons. The air is breathable. Trams and trains to an anywhere place arrive every day. They ferry people to a nowhere land called Dormiveglia. The conductor looks exactly like the night porter and only the conductor can tell the sleepwalkers when their stay will finish. Notes: The Dormiveglia di Notte (translation: Twilight Dormiveglia) is a place between the ages of night and day, between sleep and awake.
