In the margin of a 14th-century manuscript's final page, beneath a faded prayer for the dead, someone has written in modern ballpoint ink:
"This is not the end. Turn back to page 37, third paragraph, fourth word. Read only the letters the monks forgot to illuminate. They spell a name. Say it aloud at midnight on the vernal equinox. Bring something that remembers better than stone.
P.S. - The librarians are listening but they cannot read between lines."
The rest of the margin is filled with mathematical equations that appear to be calculating the exact duration of silence between the last word of every book ever written and the first word of every book that will never be written.
The equation ends with an equals sign followed by a small, carefully drawn door. The door is slightly ajar.
Behind it: nothing. Yet.
