The Third Shirt

She had been folding his shirts for twelve years, each one the same ritual: collar, sleeves, sides, thirds. Tonight her hands paused at the third shirt, thumb resting on the small stain above the pocket that looked like a continent if you squinted. She could not remember how it got there. She could not remember when she stopped asking. She could not remember why she stopped asking.
When she came not if, he glanced momentarily up from the TV, glanced back, not seeing her.
She was on her feet and gone to his room. The shirts lay smooth and stapled on the bed, he had unfolded them. He was still unbuttoning the stain-covered one as she came in.
“I think I’m going to cut off my hair,” she said.
Exactly as if she had seen the stain, he raised his head. “Hi.” It was understated and pleased.
“What do you think?” Her eyes went to the pocket , and when there was no reaction she added, “I sure hate this stain. I mean…ugh, I mean I cannot even remember where it came from.”
“Hey, something good might come from it.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“Okay.”
He cut a deal with her, to her astonishment. She could taper the backward swoop of her hair to grace the stain and turn it into something new. Something coming.
She did not say: What’s the catch?
She placed a chair in front of the window and he bent down. She slipped on the clipper guard above his head. The lights behind her brain went black with the buzz of the clippers .
A molar-tine undercut smoothed across the nape. The kick and cut of the clippers on either side of the nape was accompanied by a charge of electrical shocks across her scalp. She chopped the hair and the buzz of the clippers got faster, a panicked machine wrestling down her neck, growing wilder and more frantic, until she couldn’t think, held the hair in her hands. The waves morphed back into something else entirely, how it was in the beginning, how it must still be. His head, his fine neck. The scoop of her scissors. She came around the back again and the buzz hammered through her.
"Don’t stop," he rasped.
"Sh!" She whirled the blades down the neck. When could she have heard his voice before? Then the whisper came from behind her. "There is a telephone ringing," the phone◆ About the ending
