Behind this door, everything would be different. Behind this door, nothing would change. Both futures were equally true, equally unbearable, suspended in the amber of this moment like flies that hadn't yet noticed the trap. She counted her heartbeats: one hundred and forty-seven since she'd last blinked. Somewhere in the house, a pipe groaned its ancient, metallic complaint. Still she waited, suspended between the weight of what she knew and the terrible lightness of what came next. The second hand clicked forward once more. Her grandmother had always said that doors were neither entrances nor exits, only mirrors that showed you who you already were. She was starting to understand.
