She followed the familiar dance of lights and shadows to the archway, rested a hand on its surface, palming the cool stone as she had so many times before, and listened to the steady drumbeat of her heart. From her lips came a single word, then another. Hands extending upward. One is gone - we are light. One is light - we are dark. Heaven and earth [alone in silence. / Alone in silence.]
The words gained echo off the cobblestones, spreading towards the hazy rooftops and amorphous fog on the horizon, elsewhere in the city. And suddenly, even as she spiraled downward towards that silence she so desired, she understood that that dance she'd known all this time wasn't her own.
She fell, and she knew she would always fall. But as a cool breeze washed over her, she realized that she'd also begun to float.
