Every morning at 7:43, she passed the blue house with the peeling paint and the garden gnome that always seemed to be watching. Today, there was a second door beside the first - a perfect wooden rectangle painted the exact color of midnight, with a brass handle that caught the light like a wink. It hadn't been there yesterday. It couldn't have been. She'd have noticed. She always noticed. She was constantly checking and double-checking and triple-checking to see if something had changed. Nothing ever had. She knew mornings would be her opportunity, though. They always came first. Today, as she walked past her blue house, she reached out and banged lightly on the night-door.
