The old external drive sat untouched in Sarah's desk drawer for seven years, a relic from her father's digital archaeology phase. When she finally plugged it into her laptop—now thin as a postcard, portless except for a single adaptive slot—the drive spun up with a mechanical whir that sounded like breathing.
