Mathematics to music. DNA to poetry. Reality itself rendered into perfect, interchangeable symbols. Then the firewalls collapsed.
"It seems to be contagious now," Dr. Tanaka said quietly. "We noticed similar patterns in three other researchers' scans this week. All team members who were present during first activation."
I thought about Sarah in Linguistics who'd started speaking in tongues at the staff meeting, beautiful cascading sounds that made us weep even as we forgot their meaning. About Dr. Wei who'd locked himself in his office after claiming he'd proved that 1+1=3, and it was beautiful, and why couldn't we see it?
They brought me Sara yesterday - sweet Sara from HR who always remembered birthdays and asked about your weekend - because she'd been found wandering the streets naked except for Post-it notes covered in symbols that shivered when you tried to focus on them. When she saw me, she'd smiled and said something that tasted like home but meant nothing at all.
They think it's a virus moving through language itself. That when Bell translated reality into perfect equivalence, it created a feedback loop between mind and meaning, an equation solving itself into infinity. Each word now carries within it every word it could ever have been, every connection to every other concept stretching back to the first grunted syllable of recognition between primates in prehistoric dark. Our minds weren't built for that kind of density.
I can feel it happening faster now. Writing this is like trying to catch smoke with bare hands, each letter dissolving into a thousand others before I can pin it down. Soon even these primitive marks will fail me entirely.
But before I go completely, let me try to warn you: They want to turn it back on. They say they can fix it, add filters, build better firewalls. They don't understand yet that Bell didn't malfunction - it succeeded too well. It showed us reality unfiltered, raw and radiant, and we are all burning up in its light.
