The first anomaly appeared in the manganese oxide deposits at 42°N, 125°W, depth 3,450 meters. Not the composition itself - that was standard for vent periphery - but the pattern. Perfectly regular variations in isotopic ratios spaced at intervals of 2.3 centimeters, repeating every 47.6 centimeters across an area of 12 square meters. The symmetry was impossible. Dr. Chen's initial thought was contamination from our own sampling equipment, but the ratios were wrong. Too precise. Too... deliberate. When we mapped the surrounding area, we found seventeen more such formations, each with slightly different periodicities but maintaining the same impossible regularity against the background chaos of hydrothermal deposition. The only certainty was that the features were not natural. So we came back with another instrument. A polymer-sensitive ****** detector, to distinguish the hundreds of different polymers colloidal in the deposits and to separate the solid from molecular forms. We found unidentifiable analogs to every polymer in the periodic table. Nothing was synthesized. Nothing was human-made. Even the polymers were.... perfect.
Between the manganese and the polymers, eight drills began boring around the dome thirty-four years ago. We have drilled a perfect sphere into its base; it is the most extraordinary discovery we have found, but it is hardly the strangest. There are no cavities, no empty space between the crust and the symmetrical crystalline deposits beneath. The outer dome is clear, pockmarked with spherules, but intact. Madrigin warned us early, before she realized the military applications of this discovery, that drilling is as useless as a walk on the forebeach. Every drill and core and drill-*drill we have sent down has stopped. Stuck stiff, without a trace of hole. Two experiments, the most elaborate so far, were randomly scattered throughout the surface of the spectrum and uncovered nothing - except for a complete flux of the atmosphere across the entire reservoir, three kilometers across, triggered by an explosion sustained for forty-five nanoseconds. Every drill and crater were instantly flooded hundreds of meters deep.
